How tell if board or chip is fried (or both)?

Is it safe to plug a good chip into a board that might be fried? or vice versa? is there another method?

Yes, remove the processor chip from it's socket and then perform the 'loop-back' check (it's a sticky posted somewhere on this forum), if it passes OK then you only need to purchase a new chip that already has an arduino bootloader code burned into it and away you go. Replacement 328p chips are about $6 from several sources. If the loop back test fails then your best off just getting a new board.

Thanks, retrolefty, I'll look for that sticky. Exactly what I wanted to know . I've already ordered a new board (with chip) - but as I'm sitting with three broken boards, if its just the chip on one or more then I end up with more arduinos for minimal extra money.
