HOW TO: Arduino Yun + Hamachi?

Hello, I'm new to Arduino world. I use Hamachi for remote accessing my Raspberry Pi. I recently purchased Arduino Yun and I would like to know how to install Hamachi with the Yun for remote access.

What is Hamachi ?

Hamachi by Logmein is a VPN. Using Hamachi one can access their internet connected device from anywhere (even outside the local network)

We don't support Hamachi here. We can try to help you with the arduino products (YUN)

Hamachi is not open source based.

The chance to support it at Openwrt /Yun will be next to zero.

Agree. If you need a VPN, you'd better go with something more traditional, OpenVPN for example. If you just need access from outside your network, search the forum for setting up port forwarding on your router

My home router is a lousy 2WIRE model that won't allow me to port forward. Hence I am looking for alternative ways. The Hamachi option worked best for me in Raspberry Pi. By having a software like Hamachi running on the RPi, I was able to bring my toy (connected with RPi) and connect to any network and I could still gain remote access via Hamachi. If I were to hook up my toy to just my home network as an end point, I won't be able to make the device portable. In this case, I will just use Chrome Remote Desktop and access my toy via my Mac.

A quick google search showed me this http://www.vpngate.net/ They support openvpn too http://www.vpngate.net/en/howto_openvpn.aspx May be worth a quick check

Hamachi is proprietary software released for x86 and ARM architectures: that's why it works on the RPi and why it will work on the Arduino TRE. There aren't MIPS binaries, so it's a no-go for the yun

I looked at the vpngate.net option. It required OpenVPN which in turn requires port forwarding. Port Forwarding option is ruled out for me.

I also tried out a trick with Hamachi. There is an option in Hamachi which is still under beta works that allows mobile device to access VPN. This way, the client (in this case the mobile) doesn’t have to have any special software running on it. Hamachi provides the server ip, username, password and the certificates. I tried this option, but I am not sure how to install the certificates on the Yun. This would be closest to get Hamachi to work on Yun with PPTP option, without installing their script. You can take a look at their beta of this option at http://blog.logmein.com/products/hamachi-mobile-for-ios-and-android-is-now-in-beta

Any alternate simpler method is very much appreciated.

Problem Solved! Spacebrew is the best option. Installed it on my server and I can now remotely access and send commands to my Yun.

No, Port Forwarding is not needed for OpenVPN.
