How to connect an 8ohm speaker to an Uno?

Hi guys some simple advice for a complete noob, How do I connect an 8ohm speaker to my uno? I heard if you plug it in directly you could damage the arduino! Thanks!

Connecting a 8 ohm speaker directly to an arduino output pin can/will damage the pin. One can wire a series 100 ohm resistor with the speaker but that will cut down the actual signal strength such that you might get little or no volume to speak of. Normally you need to use a small audio amplifier to interface a 8 ohm speaker to an arduino.

Get an audio amp chip or amplifier breakout board from sparkfun https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11044 Or if you want to SUPER-SIZE it: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9612

... or keep it "low key" http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103254

How low can you go ? (For those of you who haven't been using RadioShack for 30 yrs , the part he is referring to is an audio transformer with 1k ohm impedance on one side and 8 ohms on the other so the 1k ohm side is the side the arduino would drive. and the 8 ohm side is the speaker side. It is an impedance matching transformer that has been on the RadioShack catalog since the beginning of time. If you make 555 oscilators and put a coupling cap on the output you could drive a speaker with one of those and make a toy synthesizer for your kids to play with.

ok im ordering the breakout board from sparkfun, how complicated is the wiring on it? do I need other parts? Thanks!

What wires from the speaker do I attach to the breakout board?
