How to connect this IR detector

Hello there,

I want to make a IR detector so that when someone crosses the stream of light I get notified in my audrino and my audrino turns on some LEDs (similar to this project http://alan-parekh.vstore.ca/product_info.php/cPath/1_2/products_id/1) . I am a newbie on all of this electronic stuff so half of the time I am not entierly sure what I am doing… any help is appreciaited.

With this project in mind I went and bough the stuff that they listed at the project website. When I asked for the IR detector the guy asked me if any kind of IR detectorand I said yes, because I didn’t have the specifications.

Here comes my question— >

Recenetly I learned that a IR detector and and a IR Reciver are not the same. Okay so I have an IR detector, I think… The vast majority of the IR detector that I see out there have 3 leads(wires?) to connect them. Mine only has 2, and it kind of looks like this one in here http://www.hobbyengineering.com/H1217.html …I am assuming the IR detector that I got is this one… but who knows…, this things don’t come with brand markings so is hard to tell… okay so if this is my IR detector (or a similar)…

how do i connect this thing…? and detect the signal being passed.

At the project website I noticed that they connected positive wire to a 47Kohm resistor, that is connected to the positive lead of the to the IRDetector, they then connected a yellow cable on the same lead after the resistance (which I assume goes to the IC). Finally they connected teh negative side of the IRDectetor to the negative cable. I thought I tried that on my breadboard… but now that I look at it again… I might have not… so I will try that tonight… but any help you can provide PLEASE PLEASE let me know.

what you have there is an infrared phototransistor. You need external circuitry to match/amplify the signal before it gets to the Arduino input pin. Do a good search for "IR receiver schematic", without the quotes. There should also be a part number somewhere on it or ont he bill. Use that to download the datasheet and find the pin markings and possibly example schematics.

If you want an easier solution, use one of the SHARP IR modules that has all that circuitry built in. Here's a circuit that uses one. You could probably extrapolate from that.

Thanks I will try doing a search. I have PMP transistor 4403.. I wonder if that would work.. Thanks for the help anyways.. I will do my search :)
