Thanks for the suggestions, yes that may work although I really want to get a lot more into Arduino, so having done the usual beginner projects, this is the first of my own ideas I have come up with so I think it would be a good learning experience for me to see what works and what doesn't with a bit of trial and error. hopefully I can learn a thing or two from my failures and hopefully get some successes
