How to design LED animations?

I want to make some animations using LEDs by varying their colours, activation length and dimness. If there were only 3-5 LEDs, it could be done. How do people design the animations if there are lots of LEDs to keep track of? Is there a program to help with the design?

Is there a program to help with the design?

Something like this?

Thanks. Is there other program that is more generic? For example, allowing one to design the animations when the LEDs can exhibit different colours, have different duration of activations and perhaps also arranged in a non-matrix like manner. I need to make an animation that lasts for a few minutes.

Well I am not sure, have a search on the net.

You could always write your own, the language called Processing is a good one to use and have used it myself for similar such applications. The fact you want a non matrix system makes it less likely anyone has done such a thing.

The problem with different colours is that for any given rgb value you will get different colours on the screen and on the LEDs.
