how to do an action if u recieve holded charchter

hello all
I am trying to get data from Epoc Headset ( www.emotiv.com )

the head set send data to the wireless dongle and Emokey is build in software that send character and hold it if it is still and send it once too mnay times (noise data )

i am only interested in the holded charter there is away to get an action from the
I am receiving a charter via serial port and if this charterer comes and hold itself for 5 second and more i will do something (action) if this charterer comes as pulse or does not hold for 5 second am not going to do any thing

any help would be much appreciated
