So what is the difference between a OV9715 and an OV2640?
2640 seems to be a "a low voltage CMOS image sensor".
9715 seems to be a "1-Megapixel 720p HD Video Image Sensor".
My guess is that the 2640 sends less info that the other cameras. I would think it will be difficult to get the serdes thing to work. Maybe if could slog through what each pin is doing for each of the sensors it might be the case you dummy up some input to make the 2640 look like a 9715 to the serdes, or it may be the case they use entirely different transmission mechanics and it will never fracking work.
