Otherwise you will short Vcc directly to GND when a button is pressed.
I think the speaker outputs are going into arduino inputs, and it is the speaker - anyway which is why you are not going to need a series resistor and no shorts will happen.
If you are getting a signal on -speaker with the wires clipped, then the boxes aren't configured the way I thought! Doesn't matter, though, if it's working.
