How to light up an 8 by 8 Martix

Details about my LEDS and Matrix:
They are two different colors - Blue and Green
The order of the Columns goes Blue-Green-Blue-Green
3mm LEDS

I want to drive this matrix with two 74HC595 and some Transistors

However, I have no idea on what type of transistors I would use. How would I wire this?

Also, would a transistor be used as a switch or an amplifier to amplify the current for this circuit?

Might I suggest using a MAX7219 instead of the '595? It is designed to directly drive an 8x8 led module and has built in brightness control. The following video should be helpful;

What are you needing the lights to do? All on/off at the same time? Individual row control? Individual led control? Do you need pwm? Text display?

Individual LED control. I soldered the matrix myself It is not one of those premade matrix. And I want to multiplex the LEDS.

MAX7219 is the way to go, muxes the LEDs for you, your code just needs to send 1 to 8 bytes of data to the MAX7219 to change any of the 1 to 8 columns. http://www.taydaelectronics.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=max7219 Add a 0.1uF cap, 10uF cap, 10K resistor for max brightness setting, and you're good to go. You connect your 8 common anodes and 8 common cathodes to these also to control your matrix.

Three 74hc595, yes. Or just 2 if you have 8 Arduino outputs available.

Although my choice would be an ht16k33 chip/module.

Choice of transistors: either bc327 or bc337 or both, depending how you wired your matrix. Tell us about that using the words anode and cathode.

Yes, both of those things.

The 2nd only shows rows add a few more transistors to complete the matrix.

I just realised I may have misread your original post. How many leds are in your matrix? You mentioned 8x8 but also two colours. So can I check, is it 128 leds (64 blue + 64 green), or 64 bi-colour leds, or just 64 single colour leds?

64 Leds where every column is a different color.

What are the forward voltages of the blue leds and the green leds? If they are about the same, you can use thee same value for your series resistors.
