How to make an "Ardunio-wind up" toy

I'm getting stuck in figuring out how to prototype this idea:
You pull a rope/string (like a pull-cord music-toy) and somehow arduino reads the number of rotations, and then rolls the rope back in = back the same number of rotations!

I tried using a small DC motor as sort of a rotary encoder, but haven't got far!

So... any advice (both soft/hardware concerned) would be much appreciated!

Hope it all sort of make sense?

Cheers

Well I don't think you can use a small DC motor as a rotary encoder.
I suggest you a stepper motor. You can use it both ways as a motor or as an encoder

I see... well good thing I have the adafruit motorshield Motor party add-on pack coming home one of these days!

thanks!
