You may like to edit your post to correct the last word in the title
What do you mean by map, and why is it required? Do you mean point cloud, GPS vectors, etc?
What have you done so far?
Please define your robot. If you release a bit of map gas and a spark it will get it to the next room very fast and more than likely in pieces not counting the ancillary damage.
If the above is wrong which I expect is. A lot more information is needed as to what you have, what format the map data is in, how the robot is going to determine where it is, etc. Telling us what computer(s) are involved, for all we know it could be some big mainframe.

Excellent long term project! It should keep you busy and learning for several years.
