When I start a new sketch it always starts in a new window. I checked in the forums and found a discussion on this problem in 2010. It is still not fixed as far as I can tell. Is there a fix I haven't found? I looked through the preferences.txt file, but did not see any setting there.

Why do you consider this behavior to be a problem? As far as I can tell this is normal and intended operation of the Arduino IDE.
It may be normal. If I start a new sketch it opens in a new window. It's not a real big problem, but I have to close the other window. An extra click. I know it's a first world problem, but I would like to choose the option. Most other programs give you the option to open in a new window, a new tab, or in the same window. It's about choice.
