I think your friend is wise and resourceful. The poor relay gets so little respect in the arduino world.
I don't know about that... I based my MonsterShield halloween prop controller on the SainSmart 4-relay module: http://www.hauntsoft.com
I just thought that there was a better/cheaper way to do this.
