How to trigger a bar code scanner with a motion sensor?

I'm building a stand to hold my barcode reader. In the base, I want a motion detector that will trigger when something is passed close by.

The barcode reader has a trigger for manual use. But, in the handle, it has a sensor. Putting a magnet over the sensor triggers the scanner as well.

So, what would be used to create a magnetic field that will trigger the wand? I was thinking a tiny servo to sweep a magnet into position when triggered by the motion detector. I'm sure there are makers out there that have done something similar. Opinions and options. please.

Yes, I realize I can just buy a stand for the scanner but what fun is there in that. I'd rather learn how it's done, than to just buy it.

Thanks.

How about an ultrasonic or IR sensor that causes a servo to fire up and move a magnet over the existing magnetic sensor.

Very Heath Robinson, but cool.

Hahahaha. I had to Google Heath Robinson, but yes, that's just what I'm doing. Just without the strings and whirly-gig sorta things with a chin strap!

So far, I've found: VCNL4010 Proximity/Light sensor : ID 466 : $7.50 : Adafruit Industries, Unique & fun DIY electronics and kits short-range motion sensor,

I'm getting there. I hope it doesn't look too getto. :
