how to use a linear potentiometer to open and close robot claw

For a externally powered arm, they use a linear potentiometer to get the claw to open and close. What's a way I can do that cos I'm confused on how it works

How do you move the claw. If you use a servo to move, you can simply relate the analog value to the stepps of your servo.

Split the problem in two. One part is reading the pot position, the other driving the claw. Then you connect the two parts.

Which is really just the servo knob example, with the position values adjusted to suit the open and closed positions.

(But as Daniel-S says, that's assuming you use a servo. You didn't say......)
