How to use arduino to flash a bricked arduino?

I recently had a problem with my arduino not beeing able to accept any sketches (avrdude out of sync, something). I spent quite some time googling the issue and constantly came across how to use another working arduino to hook up to the bricked one to magically make it work again, but now I can't find it anymore!

I bought a new arduino Uno (rev3), same as the first one that's not working. Any one know the procedure or did I imagine everything?
If I did imagine everything, what can I use the "dead" arduino for? (it works, just doesn't do anything and don't accept sketches...).

How can you say "it works" if it can not perform any of it's functions? It must be a new usage of the word "works" that I was previously unaware of.

Those examples are good for a UNO with a removable chip.
I have two bricked Nano boards. LEDs flash. USB works but can't load sketches.
I have a USBasp programmer and tried to reload bootloader but it didn't work.

Any ideas?

No they will work for anything, just connect the right wires up. Most boards have these pins brought out to a seprate 6 pin plug.
