HUB08 and Arduino

I recently bought a HUB08 and 2 64x16 led displays. I hoped to combine them with an Arduino Uno and a DS3231 to make large date time display. However, the HUB08 is a mystery.

I hoped to get some background out of the HUB08SPI demo included in the library. If you look at it you hook the HUB08 to the Arduino but it has no info on where the led display ties in. And, what with the 50 pin connector and ribbon cable?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've also looked at 16x128 Display Showing Date, Time, Temp, Humidity by jeffreye in Instructables but all I get is a bright red line along the bottom of the display.

Many Instructables are terrible guides written by inexperienced people who damage their components through ignorance.
