I can't type anything on arduino sketch program [solved]

I got an arduino for Christmas and decided to try it out today. I installed the drivers for the board and made sure the board was connected to the right serial port. You would think it would work right? Well, the arduino program won't let me type anything for a sketch and I know the program works because I saved a pre-made led-blink sketch to the computer (This was before it stopped working) and uploaded it to the board and the tx and rx lights blinked. The screen is also a blue-purple. Does anbybody know what's wrong?

Never had that kind of problem. Try re-downloading in case you got a bad download.

The screen is also a blue-purple

Which screen?

Would it be this?

File | Preferences | Use External Editor

If you select Use External Editor, it will gray out the screen and prevent any typing.

ok. Now it works. thanks sollenoid.
