I don't know which installation download I need for Windows

Should I get the Windows Installer or the Windows Zip file for non admin install? I'm running Win 7 on a laptop, and I'm trying to get started with a Uno R3. What's the difference?

Another problem! I took a punt, and downloaded the zip file, and when I unzipped it and tried to run it, it said it needs a Java Development kit. I looked at the Java website, but couldn't figure out how to find it. Is this a regular problem, or just one that is specific to those that don't know computers very well? As soon as I get these sort of error messages, I just "lose it" with computers, I just don't have a clue, and am scared of stuffing up my computer.

What? No replies yet to my problem? Am I the first? Or just too stupid for anyone to be bothered with?

I have checked the trouble shooting guide, and can't find these problems listed, so maybe I am the lucky one to be the first with both of these probs.

Or do I take a punt, and download the other file, (Windows Installer) and see if I can double my troubles. Otherwise, anyone wanna buy my UNO? Going cheap! Well it's of no damned use to me at this stage.

OK, I downloaded the other file, and have got it working. Thanks for all your help guys. You are such a friendly talkative bunch, I don't know what I would've done without you.

People don't like answering boring questions like this - and after you replied to your thread, the cursory look down the forum list would show that there's a reply, so we'd all just be like "Oh, someone answered, must be solved" (since it's such a trivial answer).

Normal installer installs like a normal windows program - this is fine for everyone UNLESS you don't have admin powers on your computer. In this case, you can use the zip version (provided that you have the JDK installed - installing that might require admin, but a lot of stuff requires java, so this often ends up being installed already)

Thanks for your reply Dr Azzy. Trivial to you, maybe, but I really didn't have a clue which one I needed, and the one I took pot luck on was then giving me a Java problem, that I also didn't know how to fix. So short of going to my local computer repair shop, and paying their minimum $45 fee (more than the Arduino cost me), and putting my laptop into their 2 - 3 day queue, I sought help here, hoping there would be a few knowledgeable (and willing helpful) comrades that could volunteer a simple answer to my question, as you've just shown.

Hopefully my next question (yes, there will be more) will be a little more interesting, and will engender greater interest from all the experts.

Cheers, and thanks for replying (genuinely),

Mike.
