If the BT module won't power up and pair with just 5volt and ground connected, then you must have fried it.
Not strange with all the connection mistakes you made.

But the connection mistakes were made while the board was NOT plugged into the computer. It didn't receive any power. And before I plugged it in, i double-checked everything.
