I need help getting two arduinos to communicate long range

Hello, so this is my first time posting on the forums and I am also new to using arduinos.

I am on the aerospace club at my university and we are going to be launching a rocket about 10,000 ft. While our rocket is in flight we would like to be able to see how fast our rocket is going, how high it is, and also it's GPS coordinates (So we can find it when it lands). We figure radio would be the best method to accomplish this.

I am looking for advice on how to start this project. I do not have any experience with radio so any good resources is very appreciated.

Lots of information at this site.

So how fast is the rocket going, most GPSs will stop working if the vertical speed is greater than 50m/sec ?

Reminds me of the song "Just when I needed you most"
