I've never done that exact thing, but there are serially-addressed 7-segment drivers that can be controlled with just a few I/O lines, and daisy-chained for an almost unlimited number of digits/LEDs. (I made a project with six daisy-chained [u]MAX6968[/u] chips driving 48 individually-addressable LEDs.)
Do you really need 4-digits for less than 2 minutes?
