The two chips you can see are actually pcf8574, like the one on your i2c module, but in DIP format, so they can be plugged into the breadboard.

In defence of my morass, my switches and power indicator are similar, my wires are just a bit more wavy. I had even tidied up a bit before I saw your pic, changed the wire colors to something more sensible. I tried making my wires straighter but they kept getting stuck to the iron.
