Is there only one intended standard mating fit for double row IDC ribbon cable? I have aquired a white female-female cable that spreads the male pins on my board alarmingly V-shaped when viewed side-on. I have read about soviet DIP package ICs with 2.5mm instead of 2.54mm spacing and have noticed similar, perhaps non-intentional, pitch issues with through-hole screw terminals.
In the 'old days' I recall at least two, maybe three different wire spacings that were close enough to 0.05" to be confusing. If you have something in hand that you're not sure of, the best check is to lay the cable into the 'teeth' of the IDC connector, to verify that the conductors line up with the grooves in the teeth.
