IDE 1.8.5 not uploading to a Nano (Not a seiral issue)

At first this seams to be a hard ware problem but the IDE sees the nano
just fine.
The IDE does not upload to a Nano. All others yes, just nanos.
This has occured across 3 old nano which still work and 5 new out of the
box nanos.
The test sketch is the introductory blink program, IDE 1.8.5, MacBook
Pro Touch ID 15 inch, OS X High Sierra 10.13.5 and Nano both blessed and clones.

The IDE is running alone and only the blink sketch.

Problem uploading to board. See http://www.arduino.cc/en/Guide/Troubleshooting#upload for suggestions.

I do not think this is a hardware error since all other Arduino and ESP-xxx products work
just fine and it singles out only the Nano product without discrimination of manifature
or USB interface chip. Each time the USB port is present and selectable.

If you haven't done so yet, update board manager to version 1.16.21 (or newer); this is needed for newer original Nanos.

You will then have 3 processor options. For clones and older originals, use the 'old bootloader' option, for newer originals the other 328P option.
