When you are used to, in IDE 1.9 etc, are your perhaps missing a separate Serial Monitor window in 2.0. Here is a solution: Open a newsketch, use the same COM port as your working sketch. Open Serial Monitor in the new sketch. Move it and resize it as you want. The monitor will not close, during your working sketch upload. Isn't that nice.
