IDE 2 prerequisites?

What's the latest IDE available for Win8?

None of the offered downloads start up on my machine.

Based on the fact that https://www.arduino.cc/en/software states "Win 10 and newer" in the below screenshot for IDE2.x, I suspect that IDE2.x is not supported on Win8.

You suspect?

I had expected instead a clear statement of the developers/publishers of the software prerequisites.

What about Linux versions?

Yes.

It is shown in the screenshot.

The "Software page says":

Win 10 and newer

This is intended to communicate that the minimum supported Windows version for Arduino IDE 2.x is Windows 10.

That has been the case from the very start of the Arduino IDE 2.x project. Even though not supported, some users found that it could be used with Windows 7 and 8. That incidental compatibility was lost through some change made in the 2.2.0 release. This means that the last version of Arduino IDE that can be used with Windows 8 is 2.1.1. You can find instructions for installing that version here:

https://forum.arduino.cc/t/arduino-ide-2-2-0-the-procedure-entry-point-getpackagefamilyname-could-not-be-located-kernel32-dll/1163362/8

That is more difficult to define due to the diversity of distros. We do some testing with Ubuntu 18.04

Thanks, I could install it and run "Hello World!" on my ESP32

I think that topic or instructions are worth a place in the IDE 2.x installation page.

That comment is attached to the EXE version. This would typically mean that the other offers (MSI, ZIP) are not so restricted.
