UPDATE!!! - this issue came back and after a LOT of trouble shooting and realising it was the file save causing a hang up, I found this thread from 2017
After having a look in my preferences.txt file, there were tons of "recent" files... some pointing to laptops I no longer have.... after clearing it all up the hanging is gone.
