Hi, @ptillisch this is my first post so apologies if in the wrong place or too long.
I also have the never ending pulsing logo having just updated to 2.1
Not done any coding for a while and when I opened the IDE it prompted to update - which I did only to get stuck when relaunched after the update.
Have read numerous threads on the forum and tried a few but none have fixed the issue.
I found the log files in ..\AppData\Roaming\Arduino IDE\YYYY-MM-DD_log.log
There are some warnings but nothing that stands out, have attached the latest log file contents for you to examine.

Hope this helps someone work out why the IDE will not start.
Would like to get back to writing some code 
Some thoughts;
IDE version number not in the log?
Is this a timing error between the different programme parts? something as simple as the GUI hadn't finished formatting before it was updated to visible?
Possibly due to differences in hardware - number of cores, CPU speed, etc. - my laptop is not the newest/fastest..... is there a minimum spec?
With the IDE pulsing there are 12 elements running under Arduino.
Would be better if there was an activity progress/status displayed - then people would be able to see/tell where/what was stuck/waiting to happen.
