IDE needs Window menu on Mac

I've missed having a Window menu in the IDE as a way to bring the desired window forward. This is a standard feature of the Mac UI and provided by most multi-window Mac apps, including for example the Finder, Safari, Mail etc.

How do other Mac users select the IDE window they want to view?

EDIT OK I found this open request Window menu is missing on macOS · Issue #1828 · arduino/arduino-ide · GitHub

I would say that a simple list of currently open windows would suffice, all of the other window manager function shown would be icing on the cake but not essential.

Thanks,
Joe

Until this is fixed, in case you don’t know: the standard Command-` (backtick) shortcut combo cycles through an app’s windows

Thanks for taking the time to find and share that!

I'm only barely a Mac user, since I only have and use one to be able to provide support and beta testing for macOS-specific things, but what I do is:

  1. Control-click the application's icon in the macOS dock.
    A menu will open.
  2. Select the window I want from the list in the menu.

I use this approach for all applications, not only Arduino IDE. I actually haven't ever used the Window menu.

Hey Ken

Thanks for that suggestion. I can never remember that shortcut, hence hadn't tried it in the Arduino IDE. I guess there's one shortcut for cycling through apps and another for cycling through windows and I always forget them since I prefer to use more direct approaches when they're available. But in a pinch it' much better than dragging big windows around looking for a smaller one (that's usually hiding in the middle of the screen0.

Thanks,
Joe

Thanks so much! You always come up with the best solutions and the clearest answers!

I use the dock item menu often but never noticed the list of windows, I'm more familiar with using the commands listed there. This approach is not quite as obvious as a Window menu but should work just as well for my needs.

Thanks so much for suggesting it!

Cheers,
Joe

You are welcome. I'm glad if I was able to be of assistance.
