I have just installed the IDE version 1.8.13 on Ubuntu 20.10
The first time I ran the IDE the window opened fine and stayed open. After that, if I close that window and reopen it, the splash screen appears and then disappears.
If I delete preferences.txt from .arduino15 then the window opens successfully again - but only once
I should be grateful for any ideas please
I'm no longer an Ubuntu user. But do you get any information if you start te IDE from a bash (or whatever) shell?

I got the message “Incorrect IDE installation folder: Your copy of the IDE is installed in a subfolder of your sketchbook.”
So I created a new folder elsewhere for the sketchbook and edited the preferences.txt file. Problem solved.
