so i want to use some 5050 LEDs in my project, since the 5050 is a 3 chip led, i'm planning to only use one chip, or in other words, one led amongst the 3 leds they provide "per led" if that make sense, the datasheet shows the max current is 60mA, but is that 60mA max per chip or 60mA for all 3 leds combined?
5050 is the format - 5*5mm; can you provide a link to the actual LED you will be using?
here's the specific led im refering to
I see the terminals connect seperately to each chip

In the absence of specific information I'd assume the 60mA is for all three chips.
This datasheet
for a tricolor 5050 shows Ifmax = 20mA per chip
Thanks for the reply, i've also heard the rule of thumb for a led diode is generally 20mA so it should the case.
It depends on the LED!
Cree XLamp XM-L2 LEDs
The Cree XM-L2 LEDs are high-performance white LEDs which follow on from the previous Cree XM-L series. The XM-L2 LEDs feature the same 5 x 5mm footprint as the XM-L range, but instead offer a 20% higher lumen output. So it is really straight forward to upgrade your existing designs. You could even use the XM-L2 LEDs to decrease the number of LEDs used in a design to lower costs without reducing light output or quality.
• 5050 package
• ANSI‑compatible chromaticity bins
• Binned and tested at 85°C
• Maximum drive current: 3000 mA
