If the reset capasitor is not bidirectional and was inserted in their what way should it go?

Would it still work?

What kind of resistance near it would not effect it's time constant enough to still work?

Do you mean this capacitor http://www.arduino.cc/en/Hacking/NGAutoReset

If so, a 0.1 uf ceramic capacitor is usually used and you can connect them up either way. I think most boards use a 10k resistor on the reset line and that seems to work well with the recommended capacitor

Yes I did that with a design I made the circuit board for but I used a polerised cap and wondered if it would just not work comming through a optocoupler then a pull up resistor then the cap to reset.
The cap was polerised... So I don't know if a non polerised one would make a difference...
Im trying not to over heat the board too much changing too many things..

If the cap is polarised, the + side should be connected to to the reset pin.

Ok I will try this I hope putting it the other way did not break it and this fixes it it will be nice to have 1/3 of the project working..
