I'm looking for a small laser distance measuring kit range <6 feet

Hi folks,
I'm looking for a kit complete with parts and schematics, or a finished kit for a laser distance measuring circuit. I just need a workable kit no case needed as the device will be mounted inside a larger product with only the laser transmit and receive sensors optic visible. The useable distances are up to six feet. Kit costs need to be below $20.

What is the minimum distance to be measured? Does it matter if the sensor measures distances greater than six feet? Pololu has a good selection.

Recommended for distances from 3 to 200 cm

Thanks! there are some really good suggestions here. Is there a specific Arduino IO expansion boards that I would have to purchase to work with this?

From the web page I linked to:

The sensor outputs data through an I2C interface

Although it also mentions expansion boards, they are not needed.
