So you put 12V on the 293's motor power pin Vcc2, pin 8.
There's a bit of a voltage drop through the 293, I forget the exact value but I think it's about 2V (edit : Wawa says 2.7). If you apply 12V you'll only get about 10V (edit: 9V) at the motor, so you could stick say 14V (edit: 15V) into the 293 to get 12V at the motor.
Something like this, but where it says 9V that would be your 12V (or a bit more).
