When I type in the middle of my code it replaces (types over) what is written after it.
How do I stop this as it is hard to edit code

What shape is the cursor?
Is it like this "_" or like this "|" ?
Have you tried pressing the "Insert" key?

Ah yes thank you I must have just knocked it as it is above my backspace
I only started a week ago so i havent learnt much yet

"Overtype" mode - something which was put into the original IBM PC along with the eight cursor keys, and whilst the cursor keys are essential, "overtype" has been an absolute nuisance to users ever since.
More experienced/ smarter software developers either disable it, or arrange for it to automatically cancel every time you change context. The damage is also mitigated by implementation of deep "Undo".
Another major nuisance is those keyboards - some even produced by reputable companies - with the distorted arrangement of the cursor keys.
