I don't really have the time or space to build a high-order filter.
Then you have to rethink this problem completely.
It is absolutely essential that no frequency higher than half the sampling frequency gets to the input, otherwise you have aliasing, a severe problem pointed out earlier.
With no input filter at all, you must sample at twice the highest frequency in the input, then decimate and filter.
