I am trying to design an in-car CCTV. Originally I used a laptop and SSD to record from 4 USB cameras. Unfortunately, the laptop would overheat in hot weather and the quality would suffer as the recordings would get choppy. I guess the processor was limited once it reached a certain temp.
I tried going the DVR+SSD+backup camera route, but poor DVR shielding caused interference with the GPS system. Also, the DVR was unreliable, especially given the way the car's power cuts out when it's shut off.
Does anyone have a good solution? The system must record from at least four cameras and be powered by a 12V system. Bonus points if it comes with an integrated and replaceable battery. The device should be fairly small and highly resistant to high temperature and vibration.
I thought about that, but I generally run into practicality issues with the operation. How does it turn on? Does it turn on and off reliably? What if I need to record something while standing still? Is there a battery? How does it handle extreme cold/heat? How does it handle sudden loss of power? What about the 12V on/off/on spike while the car starts? That kind of thing.
No, I don't need to do in car mobile editing. This is just to record in case of a crash.
Another option I was thinking of was buying a laptop like this: Intel Core i7-3540M, concealing it somewhere out of direct sunlight to reduce heat accumulation, and using a USB video capture card and hoping that the excess CPU power will allow it to record even in hot weather.
