incoming Number to byte

Hi Guys,
I want to convert an incoming number (over Serial) to a byte ive got a (0-255)

how am i gonna do this?

I've got the input system already so i get a clean string out of the serial
thx in advance

Really going to need more details.

sp. “going to”

The incoming byte value is raw, or in ASCII?
If in ASCII what delimiters determine the start and end of the value?

ASCII Probably,
but

void serialEvent()
{
    while (Serial.available())
    {
        char inChar = (char)Serial.read();
        if ((' ' <= inChar) && (inChar <= '~'))
        {
            inputString += inChar;
        }
      if (inChar == '\n')
        {
            stringComplete = true;
        }
    }
}

takes care of \n \r

Why are you casting to a char? Is the implicit conversion not working for you?

        char inChar = (char)Serial.read();

Have you looked at atoi()?

rusus:
ASCII Probably,

Then you’ll need to do up to 3 Serial.read() to get all the characters until you reach a CR/LF, and then atoi() on the result.

You could use 'int value = Serial.parseInt();'. That's what it's there for.

okay, i need that thingy how it is. cos i have other things also going via serial... but ive taken care of what is for that algorithm or the other stuff. So how do i get a That number in form of a string into a byte that i can shove into shifOut(); ?

Have you looked into atoi() yet?
