I currently use dupont connectors for cable ends in my projects. I like being able to make my own custom cables. What I don't like is that dupont cables are not indexed so connecting a male and female end together backwards is a possibility. JST ends seem to be a good solution to that plus the physical connection is much more robust. I thought it would be an easy task to source the plugs and pins but what I constantly get for search results are an abundance of male plugs with female pins and an abundance of female headers with male pins. I have not been able to find a source of female plugs and male pins. Perhaps JST is not the way to go. What is out there to allow for DIY indexed custom cables? - Scotty
Maybe these kinds of locking headers?
My preferred connectors are Molex KK series.
Thanks guys for responding. My current project does not have a PCB, thus no headers. It is an assembly (image included) that can be used as a transmitter or receiver. Depending on how it is used, it will have one of two different sub-assemblies attached to it. The design is intended to have two female plugs within the main assembly that will accommodate the male plug of either sub-assembly. Following the links you provided I could see only male plugs and 'female' headers. What I am seeking are male and female plugs and respective pins that would 'hang in mid air'. - Scotty
Argh, sorry, I misunderstood. Don't know what to suggest.
