Just a general query really.... I plan on expanding the ports on my ESP8266, I need both inputs and outputs, 20 of each.... What shift registers would be appropriate for this ?.
Really, Google fails you? 74HC595 and 74HC165 for example. I2C port expander IC's might be a better fit with the ESP.

Then listing the options that you have already examined, would save everyone some time. Also you are asking for an opinion without giving any project details at all. Thus an opinion is worthless.
