Infrared LEDs Indoor vs Outdoor

Hi all,

I was attempting to make a small laser tag game, and noticed that many of the toy games on the market have an indoor and outdoor mode. I believe this has something to do with the infrared LED or receiver. Could be software changes over hardware. Does anyone know what the differences are between these modes and how they work?

Thanks!

I imagine it is just a switch to change the current limiting resistor so it shines brighter outside. He problem is that the receiver can get swamped with the light outside.

Why wouldn’t they leave it bright all the time. I can’t imagine it would drain a battery that much? Or maybe I’m wrong.

Work on improving your imagination.

Because indoors it could bounce off walls or furniture, if too bright.

+1!

Haha! Ok, this is making more sense! Thank you all!

It’s also about saving power and signal to noise

100 mA will drain batteries pretty quickly
