Inquiry about Smooth Motor Options for Crane Jib Camera Project

Hello, I need to develop a project for a Crane Jib Camera. I need to install two DC motors that control the Pan and Tilt of the camera using Arduino. I was seeking some advice on which motor to use to ensure smooth movement without vibrations. I thought about using a stepper motor, but I'm unsure about how smooth it will be. Also, is it better to use a geared or ungeared motor? The motor speed is adjustable, and I'm wondering which driver to use to prevent overheating. I appreciate any suggestions you may have. Thank you for your time.

For all motors there's the parameter "kogging" telling that the torque is not constant during the revolution.
DC motors with gears likely give the most smooth turning.

Commercial pan/tilt mechanisms use special purpose-designed brushless DC motors.

google

pan tilt brushless

and keep yourself busy for a bit.

Hi , thanks for reply
I noticed that they used a DC motor with gear, but without an encoder, I'm unsure how they manage to maintain the position when the voltage is suddenly set to 0.
Is it preferable to utilize a DC motor with an encoder and program it to maintain a specific position? Additionally, when the joystick potentiometer is manipulated, it generates a variable signal ranging from 0 to 12 volts, which rotate the motor

hi , thanks for your reply

I intend to construct everything from scratch

If you mean you are making your own motors, I am impressed.

If you mean you are buying parts to make a pan/tilt mechanism, I think a part you might find useful is a purpose-designed brushless DC motor, googling will reveal sites that sell them.

Either way, fun!

Good luck.

I misunderstood
I was thinking that you told me to buy directly a pan tilt mechanism including the controller.

Thanks again for your time

Please post a handdrawn schematics. Potentiometers only give out voltage between Vcc and zero. Use controller Vcc. 12 volt pot sounds odd.

Might save a lot of headaches and disappointment and cash......
