Instant Messaging for IoT Devices

I am building an IoT messaging platform that will allow devices all over the world to communicate easily and quickly among themselves just like traditional IM messaging networks that we use every day. Your devices can use the service using AMQP or HTTP. Is this something you will find useful? Let me know if you're interested in being one of the first people to use this service when it is ready for beta testing.

Here is the site to signup as an IoT Chat Beta Tester:

Thanks!

Will this involve an arduino? many years ago I tinkered with a very basic HTTP based chat setup that basically used the apache web server for the server part on the pc and a .vbs file to perform the client function. A simple Basic programming application provided for the GUI and interface with the client and server functions.

Yes, you will be able to communicate from your Arduino to other Arduinos using IoT Chat. You will have your pick of protocols: MQTT, AMQP, or HTTP over SSL. I am using an Arduino Uno with a Wifi Shield 101 for testing. Once IoT Chat is complete, I will put a public demo Arduino on the system which can be used to test its send and receive functionality.

Do your current projects send/receive data through the internet or are they more localized communications?

The chat setups used typical TCP/IP HTTP client/server communications. Just piggy-backing on various clunky workarounds as a curiosity project.
