You can see from the photo of the shield that some of the connections that go to the Arduino go directly to some holes and don't go any ware else. The schematic also shows this but depicts it as going to some unmarked blocks. One block however, is marked J13 and that shows none of the connections are used from the Arduino board on connector marked J2. J3 doesn't have anything used either so it is just J1 that uses all but the top two of the Arduino connectors.
You will be better off connecting pin headers or sockets to the free places on the shield and connecting your other stuff to that, rather than relocating the whole shield.
Thanks Grumpy_Mike! Just shows I am a newbie as I didn't see the holes on the shield to connect components in. I tested with connecting a buzzer through the shield but interestingly it didn't work in pin 9 but it did in pin 8.
