Here's a complete work up on interfacing with the HDSP 2111 I wrote for NYC Resistor after we used one of these displays to operate as a caller id on a pnuematic stabbing robot.
We used an SN74LS595N Low Current Shift Register as the parallel shift loader for data.

Sourcing these on ebay is cheaper than from anything I saw on octopart. They are expensive little displays but very easy to work with.
