Ok, fair enough. Apparently there does not seem to be a clear definition. I never learned electronics in an institution, so I thought that was just a deficit on my side.
The Wikipedia definition is pretty strange. It lists Varistors under the text "Pass current in proportion to voltage (Ohm's law) and oppose current."
I have seen others that call varistors active.
