Hover the cursor over the image and you will see a diagonal line with arrows at both ends. Click that for a bigger picture.
Have you checked the voltage again now that it is not oscillating? It is likely that a meter would give a lower reading with an oscillating voltage, and you are now driving it with a voltage that is too high. Which would explain why now it is broken. As I said before try setting the voltage at 4V6, it will not affect the running.
