I know that couple of networks cards exist - PCI cards for PC - that allows direct fiber optics connectivity, but my question remains trying to replace a traditional media converter (Fiber Optics to RJ45). Also, I don't know whats the most suitable patch cable for this project And also trying to do it in the lowest space possible.
The good news is that a quick search of "fiber optic ttl converter" turns up LOTS of hits. The bad news is they all seem to be in the $100 range. However, I did stumble across this thread you might find interesting
